November Athlete of the Month: Samantha Birr -Where are you from and what do you do for a living? I am originally from the great state of New Jersey but have lived in a bunch of different places, (NJ, Germany, England, VA, China, FL) and recently moved to the area from Miami Florida. At the moment, I work in business development/entry level sales but I am ultimately looking to pursue a career in the national security/defense industry. -How did you discover CrossFit Arlington and when did you join? Google! I started CrossFit down in Florida last August and was instantly hooked. When I moved up here for work in March, I googled and emailed gyms in the area and CFA was the first to reply. Loved the location, atmosphere and people. The fact that is was attached to Wilson’s Tavern didn’t hurt either. -What is your favorite part about CFA? The people and intensity. Good day, bad day, doesn’t matter. I always look forward to coming to CFA and seeing everyone hard at work. Definitely gets me pumped up and inspired, especially after a long day. -Do you have a favorite WOD or movement? Planks! … just kidding….would be hard pressed to pick a favorite but I am a big fan of handstand pushups and power cleans. -What is your most memorable moment at CFA? This is going to sound super cheesy but my first day. After making the 18+ hour drive up from Miami, I managed to total my car in the snow within 48 hours of arriving in Virginia. Safe to say it was a rather rough day and I really wanted to just move back to Florida. Thankfully, I stopped in at CFA the next day and instantly felt better. Everyone was so overwhelmingly friendly, inviting and went out of their way to introduce themselves and offer help and advice for settling into the area. Finding such a nice group of people right off the bat was amazing and definitely made moving easier. -Any advice for beginners at CFA? Keep a positive attitude and never stop pushing yourself. The part I love most about CrossFit is that you get better but it never gets easier. This is definitely something for everyone, but especially beginners to keep in mind. Don’t get bogged down or intimidated comparing yourself to others, just focus on giving 100% effort and the results will follow. -What is your spirit animal? Ummmm…maybe a dolphin or a squirrel. I am pretty happy go lucky, social, curious, energetic and have a really hard time sitting still. -If you had a time machine, where would you go? The 13 Colonies in 1776. I am a huge dork when it comes to history especially American history. It would be awesome to have a beer with the Founding Fathers and witness the birth of our nation first hand. -If you could have something named after you, what would you choose. Something people order at a bar, like Fireball… but better. I would want my name to be associates with carefree and fun times with friends.
